Nancy Bentley was born on 6 october, 1914. She was the third eldest child of seven children born to Frank and Beatrice Bentley. Nancy and her siblings were raised in Smith O'Brien's cottage in the small, ex-penal Colony of Port Arthur. At six years of age Nancy was inducted into the Royal Australian Navy. The Navy looked after her for eight days before discharging her because she was 'required by her parents'. A moving and fascinating story.
