Description - Athletic Sports in America, England and Australia by Harry Clay Palmer

Published in 1889, mere months after Al Spalding and other players concluded a baseball goodwill tour that took them to four continents, "Athletic Sports in America, England and Australia" included Chicago journalist Harry Clay Palmer's 300-page travel piece about the tour, its people, stops, and games. A big news story within the States, where daily reports arrived from Palmer, the tour introduced the young game of baseball in such far-flung places as Auckland, Cairo, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), Monaco and Pompeii. This volume in the McFarland Historical Baseball Library reproduces Palmer's account of the tour in its entirety. Far and away the largest part of the baseball section in Athletic Sports the Palmer write-up took up nearly half of the book's 700 pages. An appendix includes the scores from the world tour.
