This work develops a broad, challenging picture of Barbie and shows how the cultural meaning of Barbie is more ambiguous than the narrow, appearance-dominated model that is attributed to the doll. The author argues that Barbie is an inordinately versatile cultural icon, examining such issues as her gender identity, her racial identity, her sexual identity, and her class status.
