On the evening of January 5 2006 sixty-year-old Ehud Olmert was thrust onto the world stage when he suddeenly became acting Prime Minister of Israel. Shortly after Prime Minister Ariel Sharon had a massive stroke and fell into a coma Olmert who was Sharon's deputy minister received a phone call from the secretary of Sharon's cabinet informing him of his new duties.
