Description - Cassiodorus: Variae by Cassiodorus

Cassiodorus was a Roman senator who served in the Ostrogothic administration in Italy from 506 to 538. The "Variae" were partly a political apology for the author and the regime he served, and partly a text for edification of the Roman upper class. Written in an elaborate style, they combine the mannerisms of the state document and the private letter, and are marked by complex analogies and long digressions on cultural themes. They were widely read in the Middle Ages, and are an important source for late Roman government and for the culture, ethics and politics of the time.
