This gorgeous, facsimile reproduction of the travel journal of the French architect Jean-Louis Charles Garnier--the designer of the Opera de Paris and the Casino of Monte Carlo--artfully narrates his 25-day trip through Spain in the spring of 1868 accompanied by his wife, his pupil Ambroise Baudry, and the painter Gustave Boulanger. The nearly 300-page notebook comprises the first of the two volumes in this set and is filled with pragmatic travel details--budgets, expenses, accommodations, and transport--as well as the travelers' comments on the cities they visited and, of course, hundreds of drawings by Boulanger and Garnier himself. The second volume includes three articles with an analysis of the manuscript and a study of the author and the time period that draws on the knowledge of experts on the subject.
