Susanna Rowson was a British-American novelist, poet, and playwright. Rowson was influential as she was one of the earliest female authors in English literature. Today she is best known for the classic novel Charlotte Temple, a book which was published in 1791 and was the best-seller in America until Uncle Tom's Cabin was published in 1852. The plot centers around the seduction of a British schoolgirl by a charming soldier who brings her to America but quickly abandons her after learning she is pregnant and ill.
