Description - Collected Works of John Stuart Mill: XXXIII. Indexes by Jean O'Grady
This final volume of the Collected Works presents four major indexes to guide readers through the complexities of their contents and of Mill's career as an author . First is an alphabetical list of all the items in the thirty-two previous volumes, in effect, a combined table of contents. Second is a chronological list of Mill's writings. This index provides the first comprehensive outline of Mill's authorial career, and has obvious biographical importance. Third is a cumulative index of persons compiled from the lists in the separate volumes, in abbreviated form. The references to persons include lists of letters written to them by Mill. An indispensible bibliographic aid to Mill studies, this section also makes possible study of Mill's library and reading. The final section is a cumulative subject index, once again based on the individual indexes, but bringing them together in a modified form that exhibits the range and rich detail of Mill's thought and life. In the introduction and the editorial notes, Jean O'Grady explains the methods of compilation and guides the reader through the various sections.
As she indicates, this volume is an indispensable route map for the scholars from all historical disciplines concerned with the nineteenth century, as well as for those particularly devoted to Mill studies.
