Description - The Economics of Regional Security by Jurgen Brauer

NATO celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1999, but it faces major threats and new challenges. One of these arises from its relationship with the European Union as Europe develops a defence and security identity and a European procurement policy. Part One of this volume focuses on NATO, dealing with its European dimension and the future of the organization, including new roles, missions and expansion. Part Two analyzes the economics of security in the Mediterranean region, where many new threats have arisen. In Part Three attention is turned to the sub-Saharan countries, namely southern Africa, including South Africa. This volume aims to demonstrate how concepts from economics and other social science disciplines can be applied to important issues of defence, conflict and peace at the regional level.
