Growing up in a small Northern California town insulated the author and his pals from the events of what became a generation's defining decade. Politics, riots, and Vietnam took a backseat to tree forts and tire swings, bicycle and canoe outings, bonfires on starry nights and a young-love crush or two. The tumult of the 1960s was not far away but, perhaps, just far enough.
