Conflicts over the use of natural resources and the effects of commercial logging in the region have commanded particular attention from the international media as well as environmental NGOs and the pressure groups. The study of these human-environmental interactions is especially well-suited to cross-disciplinary research and comparative region-wide analyses. This volume presents the findings of recent archival and field research on the environment by sociologists, geographers, anthropologists, economists, political economists and historians, mainly from ongoing programmes of team research based in European universities and institutes.
