Description - Faith in Action: HammondCare by Meredith Lake

As the Great Depression took hold, Hammond was challenged to do more and, in 1932, he established Pioneer Homes, cashing in his life insurance to buy several acres of land on the south-western fringe of Sydney to build affordable homes for unemployed workers and their evicted families.  The suburb became known as Hammondville. The social history side of this story is fascinating in the way Hammond looked after these people, emphasising home ownership and employment. When they began ageing as a group, Hammond responded by developing affordable aged care. It was the beginning of a whole new industry, increasingly in the spotlight today, as Australia’s population ages and demand for nursing home and hostel places surges.

Today, HammondCare services a wide range of people with complex health and aged-care needs, through dementia and aged-care services, palliative care, rehabilitation, and mental health programs. From localised home provider to one of the nation’s most respected health and aged-care providers, Faith in Action chronicles the remarkable 80-year history of independent Christian charity HammondCare. Its a narrative that mirrors, informs and is integral to the story of our nations growth.
