Founded in London in 1768 by a group of painters, sculptors and architects, the Royal Academy of Arts grew to become the primary maker of reputation and renown for artists from Britain and abroad. Over the centuries it also amassed an extraordinary collection of works by Royal Academicians, as well as a library of rare books, archives and artists - private papers dating back to the mid-eighteenth century. Works by such significant figures as Gainsborough, Constable, Turner, J. E. Millais, J. W. Waterhouse and John Singer Sargent, are presented alongside masterpieces exhibited at Burlington House by Australians including George Folingsby, Arthur Streeton and Tom Roberts. Genius and Ambition provides an intriguing overview of those artists who, through their involvement with the Royal Academy, shaped the history of British and Australian art.
