This is Part I of my memories of life on the footplate during the final years of steam on British Railways. It is 1962 and I've just quit Grammar School to become a railwayman, leaving behind the world of schoolboys and entering the workforce of a much maligned public service. This episode details my first tottering steps onto the footplate, what had to be done and learned to get there.
