Tion of Insurance Officials, in May, 1871, American Life Insurance had passed through two distinctive periods, and had nearly reached the end of the third. In the first period life insurance was done almost entirely by proprietary com panies, organized primarily for the transaction of fire insurance, banking and trust business. Fol lowing this came the period of the early mutuals and other profit-sharing companies, doing a life insurance business exclusively. The marked suc cess of these organizations, between 1843 and 1862, caused a great multiplication of life companies.
