Description - Integration and Transition in Europe by Grzegorz Gorzelak

With the harmonization of the EU economies, and issues of EU enlargement and integration with Europe's transition economies topping the political agenda, the economic geography of Europe is being recast. Several major forces are in the process of (re)shaping the European economy and society. The ongoing processes of internationalisation and structural change, integration in the West, and transition in the East, along with the EU policy of eastward expansion and enlargement are among the most important of them. All these processes and policies taken together have released market driven dynamics with a strong spatial dimension that radically change the geography of development and economic relations in Europe. This important volume analyzes the spatial implications of the on-going integration-transition process, focussing on the key dynamics of emerging pan-European geography. The book examines issues such as the north-south and east-west divides, patterns of regional development, factor movements, regional trade patterns, cooperation and cross-border dynamics.
The contributors examine these issues from one of two viewpoints: the first perspective analyses the integration transition process from a 'macro-geographical' point of view; the second considers spatial adjustments or policy responses at the national or regional level. Integration and Transition in Europe reveals that as the European geography of Europe has changed in many ways, requiring equivalent changes in policy-making.
