Description - Jonty Lees by Tate Publishing
Jonty Lees makes work informed by cycles, geometry, impatience, boredom and 90s raving. He reveals and records natural rhythm, pattern and loops by manipulating and combining devices, machines and familiar materials. The creativity of child's play and memories of childhood games are at the centre of his art-making. His recent works include Velodrom, a banked cycle track he created at Newlyn Art Gallery in Cornwall. Skimming Stones was made by inverting a clay pigeon shooting machine so that it skims stones across a lake. This action was then videoed and Lees invited a painter, Andrew Palmer, to make a painting of the moment when a stone that has been skimmed skips across the water: video and painting were then exhibited together. "Another is Spiral Drawing", a limited edition record that plays from the centre to the edge mimicking the sound and action of the artists drawing a spiral. Lees is the fifth Tate St Ives Artist in Residence to work at the Porthmeor Studios in St Ives, funded by the Arts Concil England South West and Tate St Ives Members.
Working between October 2006 and September 2007, the sculptor was selected by a panel to follow Nick Evans from a county-wide submission of artists. Born in Bangor, North Wales, and trained at University College Falmouth and the Slade, Lees lives and works in Cornwall.
