Description - Murder in Cahill by Howard Bryant

In the small town of Cahill, Georgia, back in the forties and fifties, things were different. Still, Phillip Graham is shocked when he discovers that the town's sheriff and its deputies are members of the Ku Klux Klan. Asked to join, he adamantly refuses. Although his refusal means trouble, there is no way he will allow himself to be associated with an organization that promotes acts of violence, particularly against Negroes. After several years of working at the local hardware store, Phillip Graham buys it from the owner. He hires a Negro, which brings him into direct conflict with the sheriff and a few other Whites around town. He later builds a lumberyard and hires another Negro, further angering the sheriff. As the tensions escalate and the harassment of local Negro families increases, Graham realizes he must act. But just how far will he go to stop the former sheriff, Klan member and now recluse from his reign of terror? With all other options exhausted, will he opt to resort to an act of murder if that is what it will take to end the terror? Howard Bryant grew up in a rural Georgia town much like Cahill. He now makes his home in Pennsylvania. Having lived before and through the civil rights era, Mr. Bryant sought to give an accurate portrayal of the struggles experienced by people of color. He hopes that readers will find the story inspiring and a reminder that no matter how dismal things are, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
