Description - Naturalists and Society by D.E. Allen

An exploration of the culture of natural history in Britain between 1700 and 1900. The author's interests are mainly botanical, but he has attempted from time to time to examine natural history as a unitary whole, convinced that there are many illuminating parallels and interactions between separate studies of which it is composed that would otherwise be overlooked. Five of the essays in this volume (II, IX, X, XI, XII) are endeavours in this direction.
