The introduction and annotations to this edition aim to elucidate the novel's preoccupations and origins, its historical and biographical background, and to reveal how, in creating her characters, Woolf drew directly from life. Her sitters included Anne Thackeray Ritchie, Leonard Woolf, Lytton Strachey and Vanessa Bell, the author's sister, to whom "Night and Day" is dedicated. This edition includes a map of early 20th-century London, as well as a plate from the manuscript.
