North Carolina agriculture (food, fiber, and forestry) is a dynamic industry that accounts for over 28 percent of the state's economy. Despite the challenges of the drought of 1993, the mounting pressures on tobacco growers, and ever increasing environmental concerns, agriculture continues to flourish. Expansion and diversification has helped the industry remain a major influence in the North Carolina economy.

The importance of reliable and consistent agricultural data cannot be overstated. The data in this and all previous bulletins enables the user to quickly spot the major trends in production, the increased diversification, and glimpse the financial picture of agriculture in North Carolina and the United States.

Progressive diversification increases the demand for new agricultural data series. To meet this demand the state legislature provided funding in 1994 to start data series for some specialty commodities that are important to the state's agriculture.
