This text explains the dynamics of the relationship between the people of the African continent and those of the African diaspora at the end of the 20th century. The text re-examines the relationship between the two realms of the black world via the political, social, cultural and economic dimensions of the theory/movement called Pan-Africanism. The book compares the realities of life in Africa to dreams and aspirations of the diaspora. It concludes reluctantly that the visions of the diaspora are incompatible with the realities of Africa. Notions of black identity, the politics of development and the media portrayal of the African experience are all explored. In six chapters, the book analyzes how Africa has come to symbolize different things for the people of two worlds, leaving Pan-Africanism and notions of universal black identity at the crossroads. It is argued that Pan-Africanism and the notions of black identity that are tied to it face further fragmentation, as black diasporas all over the globe further embed themselves in the societies that they live in.
It is envisaged that new pan-African epicentres will emerge based on economic factors as much as a sense of cultural identity.
