Description - Paul Delaroche by Stephen Bann
The French artist Paul Delaroche (1797-1856) achieved widespread recognition through his paintings based on historical events, and in 1853 an Italian critic remarked that he was "at the summit of all living painters". But fame in his own lifetime has been followed by almost total neglect in the 20th century. Seeking to redress the balance, this book examines Delaroche's career from his earliest history paintings to his later, more experimental works, which were influenced by photography. It also offers a detailed analysis of his major works in the context of the visual culture of the early-19th century.
