Description - Portraits in Prison by Luigi Gariglio
Begun in 1995, this project, curated by Hriprisme Visser of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, was carried out in trips through more than forty prisons in various European countries. From Italy to Finland all across Europe passing through Holland, Portugal, United Kingdom and Romania. It presents persons among persons, who by showing themselves in public manage metaphorically to regain a slice of freedom, to cancel at least some of the barriers, masks, and labels that separate them from the outside world. The photos are accompanied by parts of letters, texts of rap songs, descriptions of prison life that replace the persons in prisons in their place between the other persons.
