Description - Raffaela Mariniello by Jon Bird

Often epic in scale, Raffaela Mariniello's monochrome studies draw the viewer into a world simultaneously familiar and unfamiliar. Photographed almost exclusively at night with long exposures times, her urban spaces and sites of industrial activity are devoid of people and laid bare to our inquisitive gaze. Continuing a tradition of new objectivity and social realism popular in the early 20th century, Mariniello's photographs are a testament to the depiction of everyday social and economic realities, while at the same time imbuing her subjects with a metaphysical quality. This book, lavishly illustrated with beautiful duotone plates, bares witness to the artist's eloquent sense of space and her acute understanding of sculptural form against the backdrop of a nocturnal landscape. The works are accompanied by and contextualised with a substantial essay by leading writer and critic Jon Bird. Raffaela Mariniello was born in Naples in 1961, where she lives and works. Her photographs are represented in many international public and private collections.
