Description - Raphael and His School by Michiel C. Plomp

In his short life (1483 - 1520), Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino developed, during the Italian Renaissance, from a hard working pupil into one for the greatest artists of his time. Whilst Michelangelo was working hard on the Sistine Chapel, Raphael started working on frescoes in the private quarters of the Pope, the Stanze, is another highlight of the Italian Renaissance and one of Raphael's most famous works. Raphael is equally as famous for his many Madonnas: paintings depicting Maria and the baby Jesus. Raphael's Madonnas put those of his contemporaries in the shade due purely to their serenity, seeming simplicity and perfection. 'Raphael and his School' focuses on the origin of Raphael's drawing technique and the influence he has bestowed upon his students in his large studio. Insight into the way the drawings work in Raphael's creative process and how they compared to his frescoes and paintings are also divulged.
