Observers have traditionaly viewed Kosovo as a site where two Balkan nations, Albania and Serbia, as well as two religions, Islam and Christianity, clash over conflicts of national and religious identity. Offering an alternative to this view, the author shows that the region also has a history of coexistance through cultural contact, religious exchange, conversion. His new perspective challenges the notion that Balkans conflicts have evolved around clear-cut ethno-religious groups, positing instead that Balkan identies are full of ambiguities caused by violence and insecurity.
