Between the late 1930s and the end of the Second World War Shropshire became dotted with airfields. The RAF expanded rapidly and needed space for major new training stations. An airfield for the training of ground-based trades was established at Cosford, and new flying training airfields were built at Shawbury and Tern Hill. A substantial new airfield at High Ercall was partly used by night-fighter squadrons covering the north west.
As pressure on these new airfields increased, further relief landing ground and flying stations were opened. Child's Ercall, originally a relief landing ground, was expanded to become RAF Peplow, and two fighter training bases were built at Atcham and Rednal.
At the end of the war the decline of most of Shropshire's airfields was rapid, with only the largest surviving. Now all that remains of some is a derelict control tower or a hanger used as an industrial unit.
