Matthew Harrison is a young English doctor who comes to Australia seeking a fresh start after a tragedy in the UK. He chooses the remote north-west of Western Australia, around the Pilbara, although he knows little about the Royal Flying Doctor Service. The novel recounts his trip to Australian working his way as a ship's doctor, and his adventures as a 'Flying Doctor', battling the elements and coming to grips with the strange customs of his new countrymen.
