Few, if any, collections of photographs capture the imaginative spirit of the interwar years as convincingly as the Thomas Walther Collection at The Museum of Modern Art, New York. This remarkable group of objects features artists who were active in both Europe and the United States between the two World Wars. The creative possibilities explored through these photographs approached figuration, abstraction and architecture with unmatched imaginative fervor. Made on the street and in the studio, intended for avant-garde exhibitions or the printed page, these objects provide unique insight into the radical objectives of their creators, who were both prominent photographic figures and lesser-known practitioners. In this publication, the works are divided into six chapters grouped thematically as follows: Artist’s Life, Purisms, Symphony of a Great City, The Modern World, Experiments in Form and Magic Realisms. The publication accompanies an exhibition that will travel to three European venues.
