This book is well timed given the emerging political, economic
and industrial consensus around sustainable hydrogen (i.e. hydrogen that is not sourced
from fossil fuels) as a core component of the world’s 21st century energy mix.
The Future of Hydrogen, a landmark report from the International Energy Agency (IEA) in
2019, concludes that clean hydrogen is currently enjoying unprecedented political and
business momentum, with the number of supportive policies and R&D projects around the
world expanding rapidly. The IEA is unequivocal. “The time is right to tap into hydrogen’s
potential to play a key role in a clean, secure and affordable energy future,” says the
report. “As such, now is the time to scale up technologies and bring down costs to allow
hydrogen to become widely used…in diverse applications across industry, transport,
domestic/commercial heating and power generation.
