A very brisk fire is made in the furnace, which soon makes the whole of the retorts red hot, also the charge of coal inside the retort. The process of distillation is allowed to go on for about six hours, and during this time all the as is generated that can be economically obtained. His charge is now drawn out with an iron rake into a brick vault below, or put into the furnace; that which is not used is quenched with water, which is our coke of commerce.
