Description - The Scientific Basis of Rheumatology: Proceedings of a Meeting Held in London on 24-26 June 2002 in London, UK by Neal Morris

World-renowned rheumatologist Ravinder Maini will retire in 2002. A celebration of his achievements in science and medicine has been planned to mark the event and will take the form of a three-day conference entitled The Scientific Basis of Rheumatology, to be held at the Royal College of Physicians in London (24-26 June 2002). It will be chaired by a distinguished editorial team led by Professors Marc Feldmann, Hideaki Nagase, Jerry Saklatvala and Mark Walport, and will feature presentations from more than 40 eminent researchers and specialists. The proceedings of this conference will be published as an extensive supplement to the BioMed Central journal Arthritis Research, both online and in print, and will constitute the first edition of an annually updated resource. We believe that this major project will become the medical and scientific world's central international information resource for rheumatology. A Unique Teaching and Reference Resource; The Scientific Basis of Rheumatology will be a unique teaching and reference resource that will set the standard for communicating scientific advances to the research and medical communities.
The defining purpose of this project is to provide researchers working in the biological disciplines relevant to rheumatology with a continually updated, truly comprehensive, central reference resource. The Scientific Basis of Rheumatology will review the current state of knowledge in the various scientific fields that contribute to the understanding of rheumatology, and will provide practising physicians with an accessible summary of the latest intelligence in arthritis research and an analysis of its clinical significance. Basic Science of Rheumatology will include sections on immunology, cytokine research, signaling, genetics, vascular disorders, matrix biology and emerging therapies. Subject presentations within these sections will begin with a brief summary of historical background and will then cover new technologies, the impact of genomics and proteomics, therapy, and finally, the relevance of this information to the understanding of pathogenesis. Each section will include up to 100 key references. The audience for this resource will be trainee rheumatologists, researchers, and active clinicians.
