Since the deployment of the first peace operation by the United Nations in 1948, more than one hundred multilateral missions have been launched worldwide as mechanisms for international conflict management and resolution. This booklet provides a critical assessment of the aims and performance of peace operations, as well as their controversies, contemporary challenges and future prospects.
