Description - Verrocchio's Christ and St. Thomas: A Masterpiece of Sculpture from Renaissance Florence by Loretta Dolcini

Created to fill a niche on the exterior of the old Florentine church of Orsanmichele, Andrea Verrocchio's larger-than-life-size bronze group of Christ and St Thomas took over a decade to complete. It was hailed upon its unveiling in 1483 as "the most beautiful thing and the most beautiful portrait of Christ" ever made in Florence. This book focuses exclusively on the statues, widely acknowledged as among the greatest masterpieces of Italian Renaissance sculpture. The book looks at the history of the work and also on the process of its restoration - begun in 1989 in Florence's renowned restoration laboratories. A group of eminent art historians, including restoration specialist Loretta Dolcini, American art historian Andrew Butterfield and British art historian Diane Zervas, have contributed essays that chronicle the restoration efforts, analyze the sculpture and its place in Verrocchio's oeuvre and set the piece in its historical context. This book accompanies an exhibition of the sculpture at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, from June through October 1993.
