In the 1970s, two events surfaced on the national and political agenda which moved education from the control of professionals into the remit of politicians - these events were The William Tyndale story and James Callaghan's Ruskin speech. This book revisits Tyndale and Ruskin and examines their legacy. Drawing on contemporary accounts of key individuals who were involved in these watershed events (including Lord Donoughue and Lord Callaghan), it recasts their stories in the light of current changes in education. It argues that fundamental questions need to be asked about the nature of the reform agenda and, in particular, its balance of power.
